Natural Hair Feature: Ronni

Introduce Yourself.

My name is Ronnisha, but I prefer to go by Ronni.  I’m at the age where I’m still figuring myself out, so going natural is a confidence boost.  I’m happy to be on this journey and joining into such a welcoming community.

When did you get your first relaxer?

I can't remember my first time because I was very young, but I do remember all of my hair falling out when I was about 7 years old. Prior to my hair falling out, I had hair that reached mid back length.  Afterwards, my hair barely grazed my ears.  The smell of the relaxer, and my mom saying “tell me when it starts to burn” are memories I will never forget.

What changed your perspective on natural hair?

I have always been interested in taking care of my hair, but I was so uninformed about the natural hair community.  At the age of 16, I started getting weaves and I noticed my hair started to grow.  It was the protection the braids provided beneath my weave that helped my hair to flourish.

It wasn’t until I went to Youtube to find a review on a specific brand of weave hair that I came across another video called "weaves as a form of protective styling".  That's when everything changed for me.  One minute I'm looking at weave care, protective styles, washing your natural hair, then homemade deep conditioner recipes.  I literally spent days on Youtube just looking at these videos.  That's when I decided I would stop altering my hair (straightening, dying) and let it be what it was meant to be!

What did you learn?

I learned about how often you should actually wash and deep condition your hair.  I learned about sulfates, silicones, and parabens.  I learned how to do bantu knots, braid outs, twist outs, finger coils, and all types of protective styling.  I am very thankful for the natural hair Youtube community.

Why did you decide to cut all your hair off?

Well, while trying to head out for the day, I couldn’t figure out what to do to my hair.  It was in a braid out, but I wasn't feeling it.  I tried to spritz it with water, but it just wouldn't curl up.  I tried a low ponytail, but my bangs weren't long enough.  I just felt I looked foolish.  After the day was over, I deep conditioned my hair over night, and rinsed it out in the morning.  I looked in the mirror to see what I would do next, when I decided to cut a patch in the back just to see how long it would take to grow back. I grabbed the scissors and cut, but then I didn't stop. I kept cutting until I had cut all my hair off.  I WAS SO SHOCKED.  I looked terrible!  It was uneven, not cute, and I wasn't feeling it.  I hid my hair for 3 days until I went to a barbershop to have them shave it off, then I fell in love with my hair.

What is your normal hair care routine?

Normally, I co-wash on Tuesdays and Thursdays using Giovanni Smooth as Silk Deeper Moisture Conditioner.  I'd then do my wash and go using Eco Styler Olive Oil Gel.  On Saturdays, I alternate between washing my hair using Shea Moisture Thickening Shampoo or Terressentials Mud Wash in Lavender Garden, cowashing, or doing a hot oil treatment.  On Saturday Night/Sunday, I deep condition using TRESemme Naturals conditioner mixed with honey, evoo, coconut oil, and shea butter.  Now that I am busier, I cowash, deep condition, and style when I have a day off.

Has being natural changed anything about you?

Definitely.  I am a lot more confident in myself.  I am more in touch with the real me, and not someone I am pretending to be.  I love the fact that my peers look up to me because I had the courage to change when society wants you to be all look the same.

How can other naturals reach you? (Twitter, Youtube, Instagram, etc.)
